New electoral system to elect members to local govt. bodies

The government has completed the ground work for the introduction of a new electoral system to elect members to local government bodies, Deputy Minister Indika Bandaranayake said in Parliament today.

Mr. Bandaranayake who is the Deputy Minister of Local Governments and Provincial Councils said that the new electoral system would be enacted next year sorting out problems encountered in the present system.

He said that adequate financial allocations are made to local government members to carry out regional development work.
“Sometimes, they get more money than the MPs,” he said.

He said that steps had also been taken to provide more facilities to local government members to discharge their duties in their respective areas.  (Kelum Bandara and Yohan Perera)
