New drug smuggled into SL

A new kind of drug called Methamphetamine was smuggled into Sri Lanka for the first time in 2010, in addition to Heroin, Hashish and Cocaine, Parliament was informed today.

Last year, as many as 26 kilos of Methamphetamine had been seized by the authorities concerned.

Chief Government Whip Dinesh Gunawardane informed the House in this regard in response to a question by UNP MP Dayasiri Jayasekara.

According to the answer, 287.3 kilos of heroin had been seized during the last ten years, 6.252 kilos of Hashish and 16 kilos of Cocaine. In 2010 alone, 116.5 kilos of heroin had been seized and up to November this year 4.9 kilos.

Mr. Gunawardane expressed his gratitude to the police officers who were involved in such raids despite numerous hurdles. (Kelum Bandara and Yohan Perera)
