Opposition UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe today said that those who negotiated for the release of former Army Commander Sarath Fonseka should be held responsible for the failure to secure a full pardon with his civic rights intact.

He told a function at party headquarters ‘Sirikotha’, that those who negotiated with the government should explain to the nation the real situation.
Speaking during the ceremony to mark the handing over of appointment letters to office-bearers of the Association of Former UNP Provincial Council Members, Mr. Wickremesinghe said those who negotiated with the government to get the former army commander released should explain to the nation the real situation with regard to Mr. Fonseka’s civic rights.

“The nation had been hoodwinked as Mr. Fonseka has got only a relief by way of a reduced prison term,” Mr. Wickremesinghe said
He said those who negotiated with the government should explain the real situation as they had already said that Fonseka was being released unconditionally.

Mr. Wickremesinghe also sought the fullest cooperation of all UNP members to take on the government in the future.(Yohan Perera)
