Four Indian fishermen were rescued by the Sri Lankan Navy in the Sri Lankan waters off the Delft Island yesterday while their boat had developed an engine trouble, Navy Spokesman Commander Kosala Warnakulasuriya said.

He said that Navy boats had detected the stranded boat and acted to rescue the fishermen.

The boat and the fishermen would be handed over to the Delft police, he said.

However, Indian media had reported that fishermen were arrested by Sri Lankan navy for allegedly fishing in Sri Lankan territorial waters off Neduntheevu.

Commander Warnakulasuriya denied the allegations made by the Indian media.(Chaturanga Pradeep)
