Navy intercepts 54 asylum seekers off Mirissa

A boat carrying 54 people said to be heading to Australia were intercepted by the Navy some six nautical miles off Mirissa.

This brings the total number of asylum seekers arrested so far to 1,643, Navy spokesman Kosala Warnakulasuriya said.

The prospective asylum seekers were brought to the Galle Port and will be handed over to the CID for further investigations. (SD)
