Muzammil to contest for Colombo Mayor?

UNP Member of the Western Provincial Council A. J. M. Muzammil resigned from the provincial council today sending a signal that he would be the party’s mayoral candidate for the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) at the coming local government election.

Mr. Muzamil when contacted by the Daily Mirror said he resigned from the post as he was going to contest for the CMC anyhow. He said the party leadership had not informed him that he would be the mayoral candidate as yet but said there is a strong possibility of him becoming the candidate.

K. Y. P. Ram who was the also a front runner for the post said he, Mr. Muzamil and UNP strongman former Minister Dr. Karunasena Koddithuwakku was interviewed by the nomination board on Tuesday evening.

However Mr. Ram said no final decision had been made on the matter yet. He said he would not resign from the provincial council even if he runs for the municipal council. (Yohan Perera)
