In an unusual turn of events during the protest march by student monks, UPFA Parliamentarian Nishantha Muthuhettigama, who had come out from Temple Trees met the protesting monks and told them they can come inside Temple Trees and have ‘Danaya’ (alms) if they want, but would not be able to meet the President.

“Come inside and have ‘Danaya’ (alms) if you want, but if you want to meet the President you have to follow the proper procedure,” he said.

However the monks rejected to have ‘danaya’ inside Temple Trees but demanded to meet the President for talks.

Earlier, the JVP affiliated Inter University Monks Union march as barricades to Temple Trees were removed and police were evacuated allowing smooth marching.

The road blocks placed in the Kollupitiya junction towards the Temple Trees were removed by the police.

A police officer on duty at the scene when asked about the removal of the barriers said that the protesters have the freedom to march at any direction they insist on. (Lakna Paranamanna)
