MV Farah III sold as scrap

The wrecked Jordanian registered ship ‘MV Farah III’, lying at Mullivaikkal, in Mullative has been sold to a private party for scrap, and being demolished now, sources said.

Many tourists, who came to see the abandoned vessel, were turned away by armed forces and a road block has been erected on the road leading to the site.

A military spokeman said that the vessel had been sold to a private party for scrap and as demolition work was being carried out, people were stopped from proceeding to the vessel.

The ship, which was carrying a consignment of rice of from India in 2004, had been stopped at mid sea due to engine trouble and was brought to the shore by the LTTE.

The crew of twenty two were sent back safely.

After the end of war, the ship was brought under the control of armed forces in May 2009 and became a tourist attraction and the general public were allowed to visit. (S.K.Prasath)
