With speculation rife about a snap presidential election early next year, President Mahinda Rajapaksa will hold a discussion with the leaders of the constituent parties of the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) after today’s Cabinet meeting, Daily Mirror learns.

The President, who was in New York for the UN General Assembly session, arrived in the country yesterday morning. It is speculated in political circles that he would discuss matters pertaining to a forthcoming election.

He is expected to take stock of the current political trends in the wake of the Uva Provincial Council Election. This is his first interaction with his ministers and the leaders of the parties aligned with the UPFA after the Uva election.

The Government has already started the preparatory work for an election likely to be held early next year with the setting up of political coordinating offices and reorganising the party structure. (Kelum Bandara)
