In a letter addressed to Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, President Mahinda Rajapaksa expressed condolences today for the loss of life and property as a result of the unprecedented natural calamity in north India.

The text of the letter is as follows:

“The people of Sri Lanka and I are deeply saddened by the loss of life and property as a result of the unprecedented natural calamity in Uttarakhand as well as parts of Himachal Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh.

We in Sri Lanka share the grief of the people of India at this time of grave distress. We are confident, however, that the Government of India and the relevant authorities in Uttarakhand and other Indian states that are affected by this natural disaster possess the strength and fortitude to work towards recovering from this unprecedented calamity.

Our thoughts, at this difficult time, are with the families of those who lost their lives, those who were injured and with those who have suffered damage to homes and property.

Please accept, Excellency, the assurances of my highest consideration.”
