The United National Party (UNP) said today that the number of Government-sponsored opening ceremonies at the Hambantota Harbour was higher than the ships that arrived there.

UNP spokesman Gayantha Karunathilake said it was not ethical to spend huge amounts of tax payers’ money for so many worthless opening ceremonies.

“The Government is only attempting to improve its image by wasting tax payers’ money for carnivals and opening ceremonies and attempting to use these worthless ceremonies to divert the people’s attention from the mess and muddle the country is in,” he told a news conference today.
