Under the proposed elections law, only political parties which win more than 50 per cent of the votes in elections to local bodies will be permitted to appoint the heads of local bodies, Chief Government Whip Dinesh Gunawardene said.
Minister Gunawardene told a meeting in Anuradhapura on Monday that mayors, chairmen and deputies would be elected by way of a resolution approved by a majority of the members elected to each local body, in the event a party polling the most number of votes yet obtaining less than 50 percent of them.
