Monsoon changes coastal belt

The sea coast in some areas had changed with time due to climatic conditions and the authorities were now studying the situation, officials said today.

Coastal belt changes caused by the accumulation of sediment resulting from monsoons have affected Kalpitiya, Manalkadu, Potuvil, Panama, Kumana and Hambantota.

Coast Conservation Department Director Anil Premaratne said today his officials were studying the changes that were happening around the country.

He said beaches get narrower during monsoon seasons.

“They widen again when the monsoon ends. It is a continuous process.  There is an accumulation of sediment which leads to changes in the coastal belt around the country,” he said.
