Mobile prostitution ring - Suspects get bail

Six women and two men who were allegedly involved in a mobile prostitution ring at the Galle Face Green were released on bail after being produced before the Colombo Fort Magistrate Ms. Lanka Jayaratne.

The suspects arrested by the Fort police were released on a cash bail of Rs. 5,000 and surety bail of Rs.50,000 each. The police told Court that one of the women had charged Rs.5,000 from the decoy who carried out the raid and subsequently arrested the other suspects.

Two women who operated the ring were among those arrested and two vehicles alleged to have been used for the operations were also taken into police custody. Police told Court that two vehicle drivers who were involved in allegedly aiding and abetting the offence were also arrested and produced in Court. Meanwhile, the police filed a separate charge sheet against the main suspect woman for possessing pornographic video clips on her mobile phone.

The suspect who pleaded guilty to the charge was ordered to pay a fine of Rs.2,500, by the Magistrate who further ordered the police to confiscate her mobile phone. Defence Counsel P. C. de Silva appeared for the suspects while SI Chathuranga and Sergeant Sunil of the Fort police prosecuted. (Lakmal Sooriyagoda)
