Military security for polls

The police have sought the assistance of the three armed forces to ensure that security is maintained during the General Elections next week with more than 7000 candidates expected to contest for a seat in parliament, IGP Mahinda Balasuriya said.

The IGP said that in addition to the 59,000 policemen deployed for election duty, they have sought the assistance of 20,000 military personnel.

He added that the police together with the help of the armed forces will ensure the security of the voters, polling stations and transportation of ballot boxes as 7620 candidates representing 36 parties and 306 independent groups are taking part in the elections. (SD)
