The military today refuted allegations made by Minister Douglas Devananda on the security situation in the Jaffna Peninsula.

“The military totally refuting those claims,” Jaffna Security Forces Commander Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe told Daily Mirror.

Minister Devananda told Parliament yesterday that fear psychosis is present in the North and the crime rate is on the rise in Jaffna.

Major General Hathurusinghe also said that the army had begun routine night patrols while assisting the police in maintaining law and order in Jaffna. “The crimes are related to burglaries, killings and other criminal activities by civilians which are mostly based on personal disputes”, he said.
