IIn a scathing attack against Ex- President Chandrika Kumaratunga in response to a speech she made in Kandy, Minister Mervyn Silva said that that the former President should be aware that he possesses many secrets about the Bandaranaikes and would reveal them if compelled to do so.

Speaking at a specially convened news briefing the Minister made remarks of a personal nature on the former President, her sister and son which could not be published due to its defamatory nature.

“I have kept my mouth shut for this long but now I’m opening it and will continue to speak. I am not afraid to tell what I have to tell” he said.

The controversial Minister said that the former President had forgotten what he remembers.

“She has forgotten that when the great S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike walked the aisle it was D.A Rajapaksa who was beside him.  She has forgotten what I remember” he said.

Minister Silva referring to parts of the speech made by President Kumarathunga, said that people worship the Rajapaksas because southerners are grateful people.

“The country today is not like what it was under her leadership. She never worked on time, the country was without electricity. During that time the husband couldn’t find his wife in the night, and the wife could find the husband and therefore they slept with workers in the house. This was how the country was” he said.

The Minister also said that he was the broker of the marriage between Vijaya Kumarathunga and the former President.

“I was the broker of that marriage. I lived in that house at the time. I’m the one who took Vijaya to Aththangalla and to Nuwara Eliya. There was a time that the Bandaranaikes couldn’t do anything without Mervyn Silva. I was always in Sunethra Bandaranaikes vehicle” he said.

The Minister also said that he would never, betray another.

“I won’t betray people but I warn Madam Chandrika that my mouth is not very good there are a lot of things that I have to say and if she tries to be too smart I will reveal everything. I’m not afraid” he said.

The Minister in reference to a comment made by the Ex -President to the effect that thugs could not be politicians and that there were parliamentarians who tied public servants on trees , said that many SLFPers including himself were given nominations during her regime.

“Many of the parliamentarians including me received nominations under Madam Chandrika and her mother. I became a person that the Bandaranaikes couldn’t do without. I saw the sun rise, set and the moon rise at their house. Sometimes we gazed at the beautiful moon and stars. Only now I have become the person who tied people to trees” he said.

The Minister said that it was not only people that he could tie on trees, and that he even had the chance to marry a Bandaranaike.

“I’m saying this publicly, I had the chance to marry someone from the Bandaranaike family. But because I don’t use the fork and spoon and because I’m a ‘godey’ man I postponed it” he said.

When questioned by journalists as to the reason behind his allegations against the former President, after being a faithful person to her, the Minister said it was because of the nature of the remarks made by the former President. (Hafeel Farisz)
