Public Relations Minister Mervyn Silva today said that despite a large number of problems in the country, the main opposition UNP leaders squabbling with each other over the venue to hold the party’s May Day rally.

Speaking at an event in Kelaniya this morning, the minister said “There is a new type of competitions during this New Year season for the first time in the history, it is between two factions within the UNP, whether to hold party’s May Day rally in North or in Keselwatte.”
“We have major problems in the country, we have to discuss the people’s problems, but this party is arguing about holding the May Day rally,” he said.

He said that UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe and others were trying to hold the party’s May Day rally in Jaffna, whereas Deputy Leader Sajith Premadasa and others were trying to hold it in Keselwatte.

He called upon the UNP strongmen to stop this and try to reach a compromise or to visit a temple to engage in religious activities on that particular day. (Lal s Kumara-Kelaniya)
