The UNP today said it would organise a protest under the theme ‘Samagi Balawegaya’ on August 14 urging the government to arrest those responsible for the incidents atGrandpass and Weliweriyaand demanding answers and explanations to what happened in those areas.

It said the protest campaign would be launched near the Fort Railway Station and would be a historical one as it would not back down until the government gives an explanation.

“The Weliweriya and Grandpass incidents are proving there is anarchy in the country. We willfight the anarchy and restore rule of law in the country,”UNP MP Ruwan Wijewardene told a news conference.

MP Harin Fernando said the Grandpass incident was set up by the government to make people forget about the Weliweriya incident and asked why the government was labeling a request by innocent citizensasking for water as part of an international conspiracy.

He said Muslim politicians in the government should play a major role when protecting Muslim people without being silentwhen they were attacked.

Mr. Fernando said if attacks on innocent people keep continued, countriesthatattend theCommonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in November would heap allegations against the country.
