Marks have been lowered, performance of students have not improved: JVP

The Education Ministry lowered the cutoff point for awarding grades at the G.C.E. Ordinary Level Examination last time, and it was the reason for the increase in the number of students who passed the exam, Parliament was informed today.

During question time, JVP parliamentary group leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake said that the cutoff mark for awarding an ordinary pass for Mathematics had been reduced to as low as 17 last time.

“This is the reason for the increase in the results. Otherwise, it does not reflect that students have performed well at the exam. Instead of taking steps to improve the performance of students at such a national exam, the Ministry has lowered the cutoff marks for awarding grades,” he said. (Kelum Bandara and Yohan Perera)
