Marawila killing - daughter safe

The police dismissed reports that a six year old girl was abducted after her father was shot to death by an unidentified person in Naththandiya on Sunday morning. She is safe in the house of the sister of her deceased father.

The father had kept his daughter at his sister’s place and was shot to death while he was on his way back. The incident took place down a by-road leading to the Marawila Town between 5.30am and 7.00am on Sunday, the police said.

Police found gunshot injuries in his chest area. His body was found with a helmet on, by residents walking along the road, the police said.

The victim was identified as Rukmal Gayan (40) a resident of Maiylawa. He was living with his daughter as he is separated from his wife, who is employed in the Middle East.

According to his family members he had received number of threats from his in-laws since the separation. He was engaged in a number of small businesses and he was also a lottery agent in the area.

The Marawila police are conducting investigations into the incident to ascertain whether the victim was accompanied by another person, as his motorbike has gone missing following the incident.  (Supun Dias)
