The Motor Traffic Department said today it was mandatory for vehicle drivers to carry the eco certificate which was a must for vehicle registration.

According to the new law a driver should submit the eco certificate when officials inspect the vehicle for emission.

However vehicles that fall into the categories of land vehicles (Tractors, land masters…etc.), vehicles that imported before 1975 and hybrid vehicles are not required to obtain an eco certificate.

Department Commissioner H.S. Harishchandra said department officials have been tasked to examine emission in vehicles.

Meanwhile the Department with the cooperation of the Central Environmental Authority, the Environmental Ministry and the Measurement Units and Standard and Services Department had deployed teams to investigate Eco Testing Centres.

The Commissioner said his Department would organise workshops to educate garage employees how to reduce emission when repairing a vehicle and added that full time courses in Germen Tech and other Technical Institutions would be organised by the Department to train garage employees.

He said the Department would provide funds for the courses.

The Commissioner said the irregularities that occurred when issuing eco certificate had been reduced today.(CP& LSP)
