A 28-year-old man who had allegedly married five young women during a period of eight months and lived with them was arrested today by the Chilaw police.

He had led a lavish lifestyle and was allegedly addicted to drugs, police said.

The suspect who had posed as a landed proprietor, had deceitfully obtained about Rs.3.2 million by pawning the jewellery of the wives.

The police had recovered two marriage certificates and jewellery worth about Rs.400,000 pawned by him.

An employee of a garment factory and another who had returned from foreign employment are among the women who married the suspect. He had also entered into marriage with two Muslim women pretending to be a Muslim. The young girls he had married are from Walahapitiya, Sella Kataragama, Rajanganaya, Bandurawa and Galnewa.

The suspect has served a two-and-a-half year prison term before he started marrying women fraudulently during June 2011 to January 2012. The suspect had sent some women abroad for short periods after marriage.

He had usually ensnared most of the women while travelling in buses. (Augustine Fernando)
