Man arrested with gold slabs worth Rs 2.8mn

A 39-year-old man was arrested at the Bandaranaike International Airport today while attempting to smuggle four gold slabs weighing 400g and worth around Rs.2.8 million, Customs officials said.

They said the suspect who was a resident of Kandy and was on his way to Mumbai.

The gold slabs were pasted to the bottom of his slippers. The customs confiscated the gold slabs and imposed a fine of Rs.50,000. (Deepa Adikari)
