Man arrested for cheating 35 women

Police arrested a person who posed as a lawyer, cheating nearly 35 women by taking their jewellery worth Rs.6 million on the promise that he would marry them.

He was taken into custody while he was hiding in Kegalle when the police received a complaint from one of the victims in Nuwara Eliya that the suspect had taken away jewellery belonging to her worth Rs.500,000 by making the same promise.

During investigations it was revealed that he had placed advertisements in marriage proposal pages in Sinhala and English newspapers. The victims are from around the island but especially from upcountry and down south. (Supun Dias)
