Majority of UNP Provincial Council members accept Karu

The majority of the UNP Provincial Councilors have decided to accept the proposal in appointing Karu Jayasuriya as the party leader, MP Sajith Premadasa said.

He said that the proposal was taken up last evening at a meeting held with the provincial council members. The proposal was produced by councilor Badulal Bandaragoda and was accepted by Asamanage Wijesinghe.

“We made these proposals to bring the unity and stability to our party. Our main objective is to install a people friendly UNP government which will protect human rights and put an end to corruption," he said.

Responding to a question that UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake has mentioned that these changes should be done legally in accordance with the party constitution. Mr. Premadasa said that the constitution was prepared with the blessings of the supporters.

“We need to build a UNP which will win all elections. How many times has our party constitution been violated since March 23," he added.

MP Dayasiri Jayasekara said that they plan to solve and they hope the proposals made by Mr. Premadasa will be accepted by the majority of the party before August 18. (Supun Dias)
