President Maithripala Sirisena today said he would appoint a committee headed by a retired judge to investigate fraud related to the Golden Key case.

Speaking at a function to refund Golden Key depositors, Mr. Sirisena said the depositors had to suffer due to financial companies failing to follow stipulated government guidelines.

"The injustice done to Golden Key depositors was one of the worst disasters in the country’s financial sector, and the government at that time must take responsibility for it,” the president said.

He expressed sympathy to the depositors for their financial losses, and pledged that the government would do its utmost to support them.

He said this would be a case where the government practices good governance as per the pledge given at the last presidential election.
