UNP Provincial Councillor Maithree Gunaratne has withdrawn the case filed in the Mount Lavinia Magistrate’s court after UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe’s lawyers informed court that the decision to extend the term of leadership for six years was only a proposal and there was no amendment to the constitution to that effect.

Mr. Gunaratne said the lawyers had categorically told in court that the proposal would be submitted at the next party convention.

“They said this was only a proposal and not a constitutional amendment. Therefore there has been no extension in the term of the party leader despite declarations to that effect” he said.

Earlier, the Mount Lavinia District Court issued an enjoining order restraining the UNP from acting on the constitutional amendment, which states that elections for the party leadership should be held every six years (By  Hafeel Farisz)
