Audio: 'Mahasen' no more

The Meteorology Department had decided not to use the name “Mahasen” any longer for the cyclone that moving away from the country.

Following the various pressures received, the department had decided to remove the name from the cyclone, according to sources.

However, the department declined to comment the reason, which led to removal of the name.

Meanwhile, the sources at the department revealed the decision was taken after the received pressure from several organisations urging not use the word ‘Mahasen’ for the cyclone.



Speaking to the Daily Mirror a Meteorology Department Deputy Director S.R. Jayasekara said the countries around the Bay of Bengal had given a list of names eight years ago for upcoming cyclones.  

The naming system for a cyclone was arranged by the alphabetical order of the name of the country.

The next Sri Lankan named cyclone would come after seven cyclones were named by the names given by other countries, the Department said.

The current cyclone would remain nameless while the name ‘Priya” would use for the next cyclone. (Sanath Desmond)
