Pradeshiya Sabha (PS) UPFA member W.W. Chandrasiri has resigned saying the monthly salary being paid to a Pradishiya Sabha member is inadequate and would go back to his previous job at the Civil Defence Unit.

Mr. Chandrasiri who is from Central Nuwaragama in Anuradhapura said he was unable to meet the increasing financial obligations on his current salary and therefore was compelled to resign.

Although he won a seat without having to spend large sums of money on campaigning, his decision to resign highlights the plight of less affluent politicians.
Having served in the Civil Defence Unit (CDU) until 2011, Mr. Chandrasiri resigned after being elected as a PS member polling 5,265 votes for the UPFA.

Mr. Chandrasiri said he had made a request for reinstatement from the Director General of the CDU.(Hasitha Nirmana)
