In a 12-hour operation carried out by a team of doctors in the plastic surgery section of the Colombo National Hospital a completely severed penis was successfully rejoined, Unit’s Chief Surgeon Dr. Duleep Perera said.

The operation was performed on 27-year-old man, a father of one child.

The surgical operation was performed under the supervision of Dr.  Duleep Perera and  Dr. Dammika  Dissanayaka with the assistance of  Dr. Kapila Mendis,  Arunajith  Amarasinghe,  K. Kelvin, Kumaran, Raveendra Rajapaksa  and specialist surgeons  Prof. Neville Perera  and Dr. Lalantha  Amarasinghe.

Dr. Dissanayaka said the patient was sent to CNH from the Puttalam hospital with his severed penis within four hours of the incident.
“The short period of time and the manner in which the severed part was brought to the hospital immensely helped to carry out the surgery successfully. And we embarked on the operation immediately. How the incident occurred was not then known to them,” the doctor said.

The Chief Surgeon of the Plastic Unit Dr. Duleep Perera said it was a complex operation. (Text and pix by Tharangani Fonseka)
