Look out; heavy rains on the way

The Department of Meteorology today warned of severe weather conditions resulting from a sudden increase in the wind speeds countrywide.

The Disaster Management Centre quoting the Department of Meteorology said wind speeds would increase to between 70 and 80 kmph because of the tropical convergence zone in the atmosphere above Sri Lanka.

The Met Department also waned of heavy showers of up to 100mm at times.

Meanwhile heavy rains were reported from many parts of the country particularly in the Central hills with the highest rainfall of 77mm reported from Katugastota while a rainfall of 74mm was reported from Matale, Palugaswewa a rainfall of 50mm, Castlereagh 62mm, Kotmale 58mm, Ukuwala 63mm, Mausakelle 45mm, Canyon 48mm and Bogawantalawa 48mm.
