Leadership training not legal: NYF

The UNP led National Youth Front today charged that the proposed leadership training programme in military camps for the university students would be illegal as there is no provision for it in the Universities Act.

National Youth Front head of the committee on Education Dhamika Wickramaarachchi told a news conference today that this is also an act aimed at scrapping the democratic environment in the university system. “There is a healthy debate in the university system where there is exchange of ideas but the military training would change that atmosphere as it is based on the characteristic of confrontation,” he said.

Dismissing the government’s claim that the students will be only given a leadership training with the objective of instilling discipline in them, the student leader said the list of things which the students are being asked to bring makes it clear that it is nothing but military training. He said they have been asked to bring two bed sheets, two pillow cases, two pairs of blue shorts, a track bottom, two t-shirts which are essential for some kind of physical training. “Why do you need shorts and t shirt for a leadership training?,” he asked.
