LC elections in March

The government will dissolve the Municipal Councils, Urban Councils and Pradeshiya Sabhas in January and hold elections to the Local Councils in March next year, Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) General Secretary, Minister Maithripala Sirisena said today.

The government meanwhile will present the Local Authorities Elections Amendment Bill in Parliament on January 4.

Daily Mirror reliably learns that the government is not keen to have the Bill approved. It was drafted based on the findings of an all party Parliamentary Select Committee headed by Chief Government Whip Dinesh Gunawardene.

Minister Sirisena said the SLFP was fully prepared for the forthcoming local council elections and would start its campaign by requesting prospective candidates to send in their applications between January 1 and 15.  (Sandun A. Jayasekera)
