The Sri Lanka Law College has reduced the cut off mark of the law entrance examination thereby increasing the law college intake from 309 to 551, official sources said.

The Incorporated Council of Legal Education of the Sri Lanka Law College met yesterday and a unanimous decision was taken to reduce the cut off mark in order to increase the intake of students.

Several students who sat for the law entrance examination protested when the results were released last month saying that the results were ethnically biased and that the paper had been leaked prior to the examination which was held in August 2012.

The cut off mark for the examination was brought down from 69 to 66, thereby increasing the student intake by an additional 242 students.

However, the Law College Principal Dr. W D Rodrigo refused to comment on the matter but said that an official statement would be released today (Friday).
Meanwhile students said that they were pleased with the decision to reduce the cut off mark as many students who wouldn’t have had the opportunity to enter Law College could now do so.

The Law Entrance Students’ Union added that they were pleased with the decision to increase the intake but that they were still displeased that despite their continuous requests the authorities had failed to hold the examination for a second time.

“If the examination was held again then we could have prevented a repetition of the fraudulent acts that had taken place the first time. This allows those who do not deserve to enter the law college to do so,” said union spokesman Ramzi Bacha. (Olindhi Jayasundere)
