Law and order gone to the dogs: Dayasiri

UNP MP Dayasiri Jayasekara yesterday said that the issue surrounding Malaka Silva and his alleged assault on an Army officer was a clear indication of “democracy and the rule of law in the country going to the dogs”

“From the time Minister Mervyn Silva tied up a man to a tree and the shootout involving Duminda Silva and Baratha Lakshman Premachandra, and now to the most recent assault on an Army Major allegedly  by Malaka Silva have  all resulted in the government actually telling the country not to mess around with the powerful. If you mess with the powerful the law will work against you. This is the message that is given and this country has fallen to such low levels. Democracy and the rule of law have both gone to the dogs. The law is today used according to  the whims and fancies of politicians ,” he alleged.

Speaking to the Daily Mirror in a wide ranging interview which can be found elsewhere on the site, Jayasekara said many members in the government are also disappointed over the current status quo.

“Many members in the government also are against the current status quo. A minister, who personally spoke to me after I raised this issue in parliament, told me that I said exactly what he had in mind. When I asked him why he didn’t discuss it publicly he told me that he wasn’t in a position to do so. This incident itself speaks volumes of the depths of the breakdown in law and order,” he said.( By Hafeel Farisz)
