Lankans charged with murder

An employee of a telecommunications company and two Sri Lankan factory workers were charged in a Magistrate's Court in Malaysia today for murdering a cafe manager, two weeks ago.

E. Mahendran Pillay, 39, S. Jeyarupan, 27, and D. Sivaingkaran, 22, nodded that they understood the charge when it was read out to them in Tamil before Magistrate Aishah Hijriah Arshad.

According to the charge sheet, the trio were alleged to have murdered Anson Hemathilaka Anson Albert, 29, at Block 1, Jalan RP 7, Jalan Klang Lama in Malaysia between 3pm on July 14 and 2am the next day.

All the three were charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which carries the mandatory death sentence, if convicted.

The Magistrate then set September 1 for re-mention.

Deputy public prosecutor Choong Kak Sen appeared for the prosecution while only the first accused Mahendran was represented by Counsel Puan Sri N. Saraswathy Devi.

The victim's body, with hands cuffed and mouth taped with masking tape, had been thrown into the Klang River near Taman Datuk Harun in Malaysia. (Bernama)
