Lankan scholar attacked in India

A PhD scholar from Sri Lanka, who was pursuing her research at National Dairy Research Institute, (NDRI), Karnal in India was seriously injured on Thursday evening after she was attacked by a gang of unidentified youths.

The victim is identified as 42-year-old NMAK Narayana who was enrolled in the dairy technology department.

She sustained serious head injury and her condition is stated to be serious.The incident occurred at the Mall Road and spot is just a few meters away from the official residences of the deputy commissioner and the superintendent of police. The victim was rushed to Trauma Center from where she was referred to a private neurosurgeon in the town.

She was returning to her campus hostel from the market on a rickshaw when the incident happened.

Certain eyewitnesses told the police that a group of unidentified motorcycle-borne youth tried to stanch her purse and jewelry and in the melee she fell from the rickshaw. Police sources said that it was yet to be confirmed if the incident occurred by the snatchers or it was an attempt of molestation.

Terming the attack on the foreign student as unfortunate, NDRI director Dr AK Srivastava said that after her planned research work Narayana was scheduled to go back to her native country on Saturday. (Hindustan Times)
