The death of a 28-year-old Sri Lankan man in North Canterbury has come as a shock to the community of his home country.

Christchurch police are treating the death of Sameera Chandrasena as a homicide investigation.

It follows a fire at his Oxford home last Thursday.

United Sri Lanka Association vice president Channa Ranasinghe says his death comes as a shock.

"I also heard that he's very cheerful and supportive member of the community and I think it has come as a shock to everybody."

Mr. Ranasinghe says the United Sri Lanka Association will do all they can to help the victim's family.

"If there's anything that we can do from this end to help these affected families, we are more than happy to do something in our capacity to help them."

And Christchurch police are seeking any sightings of a white Mitsubishi Chariot in relation to the incident.

They're asking the public who may have seen the vehicle travelling from Oxford towards Christchurch in the early hours of Thursday morning. (Source: Newstalk ZB)
