Lankan detained for using fake Indian passport

Immigration officials at the airport here today detained a Sri Lankan national, who had been deported from Dubai, for allegedly travelling on a fake Indian passport.

30-year-old Vasanthan left for Dubai en route to Parisvia Kochi yesterday with a passport having a false address, airport sources said. Immigration authorities in Dubai questioned the man, who confessed of belonging to Jaffna in Sri Lanka. He held a passport in the name of Palanivelu, which was issued from the Chennai Passport Office, the sources said. The detainee said he reached Chennai as a refugee during the internal strife in the island nation and managed to get a passport in the name of Palanivelu and left for Pariswith it. Vasanthan has been handed over to the police and investigations were on to find out if he has any LTTE connection, the security agency said. Cases will be filed against him for violation of the Passport Act, impersonation and cheating, police said. (Manorama Online)
