Rs. 10.6 million belonging to popular X-Files actress Gillian Anderson and her husband had been misappropriated by the Sri Lankan caretaker in charge of their property, the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) submitted before a Colombo Court.

In the case at the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court, the Sri Lankan caretaker Anura Weeraratne Bandara was charged with having misappropriated Rs.17.8 million from the Sri Lankan properties owned by Ms. Anderson.

Filing a fact report before the Magistrate, the CID stated that though the complainant party had charged that the caretaker had misappropriated a sum of Rs.17.8 million, however, investigations conducted so far had revealed that the suspect had only misappropriated Rs.10.6 million.

The CID further told Magistrate Dammika Hemapala that it had already concluded the investigations into the incident and extracts of the investigation report had been forwarded to the AG for his advice.

In a complaint to the CID, Job Davis a British national complained that suspect Anura Weeraratne Bandara had been entrusted to administer the American actress’ properties located at Nugadola Watta in Pasyala, where he had had committed this offence. The complainant alleged that the suspect had obtained Rs.17.8 million from another company affiliated to the concerned properties for service requirements.

It further transpired in court that Ms Anderson had bought the seven acres of land in Nugadola Watta Pasyala with the objective of inaugurating a Non-Governmental Organisation in Sri Lanka. The land had been bought in the name of Hill House Private Ltd. And the suspect Anura Weeraratne Bandara had been appointed as manager of the property.

The CID maintained that the suspect had obtained Rs. 6.8 million for the purpose of supplying electricity to the property and thereby misappropriated Rs. 1 million. (Lakmal Sooriyagoda)
