Landslide warning had been extended for the next 24-hours to Nuwara Eliya, Galle, Kandy, Kegalle and Matale, Ratnapura and the Kurunegala Districts as the wet weather condition was expected to continue, the National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) said.

People living in these regions had been requested to give special attention on all mountain areas, manmade slopes and roads within the districts, Senior Scientist at the NBRO Dr. H.A.G. Jayatissa said.

No landslide incidents had been reported so far, according to Assistant Director of the Disaster Management Centre Pradeep Kodippili said.

Fifteen houses however were reported to be damaged due to strong winds this evening, he said.

According to the Meteorology Department, showers or thundershowers would be widespread over the island during the night for the next few days.

“Heavy falls more than 100mm are also likely at some places in the Sabaragamuwa, Central, Southern and the Uva Provinces,” the Met. Department said.

“There may be temporary localised strong winds during thundershowers. General public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions against lightning,” it said. (Chaturanga Pradeep)
