Lack of enthusiasm among voters – monitors

Election monitoring bodies have claimed a lack of enthusiasm among voters during the ongoing Provincial Council polls held in the Sabaragamuwa, Eastern and North central provinces.

According to Campaign for Free and Fair Elections (CaFFE) Director Keerthi Tennakoon, fairly a low voter turn-out has been observed in the polling stations so far. “During previous years, an early voting trend was observed in most of these provinces, particularly Sabaragamuwa. However, this year the trend seems to have drastically changed,” he said speaking to Daily Mirror a short while ago.

People’s Action for Free and Fair Elections (PaFFREL) Executive Director Rohana Hettiarachchi too confirmed observations of a comparatively low voter turnout.

Meanwhile, election monitors claim the situation with concern to election violence is under control in all areas where the provincial council polls are being held. (Lakna Paranamanna)
