Kaluwaragaswewa Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman (UPFA) was arrested by the police for allegedly assaulting a motorist who was answering a phone call by the road side at the 16th mile post at Kaluwaragawewa, police said.

They claimed the chairman was under the influence of liquor at the time of the incident. The motorist was an office assistant at the Puttalam Divisional Secretariat office.

Both, the PS chairman and the motorist had lodged complaints with the Kaluwaragaswewa police alleging that they were assaulted. Both were taken into custody and admitted to the Thabbowa hospital under police guard.

There are five more complaints lodged against the PS chairman - one at the Kaluwaragaswewa police and four at the Saliyawewa police - including a previous alleged assault on another office assistant under the influence of liquor.

The PS chairman is to be produced before the Puttalam Magistrate today. (Jude Samantha and Hiran Priyankara Jayasinhge)
