Covert intelligence operations, strong ties and good international relations with other countries helped Sri Lanka arrest the former chief LTTE arms procurer Kumaran Pathmanathan alias KP, Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa said.

He added that Kumaran Pathmanathan, who had a wide spread international web to conduct his terrorist activities, was captured because of the significant steps taken by the Foreign Ministry and the Defence Ministry who created a Defence network to do so.

KP who was arrested from a South East Asian country in August, last year by the Sri Lankan authorities is still being interrogated.

Pathmanathan who proclaimed himself as the leader of the LTTE after the death of Velupillai Prabhakaran was an international arms smuggler who procured substantial loads of weapons worth billions of dollars for the LTTE during the conflict. He was suspected of being involved in arms smuggling operations across Asia, Canada, US and Europe.
