UNP MP Ruwan Wijeyawardene said one should remember that incidents such as the Kolonnawa killing could lead to severe repercussions such as an uprising of the people.

Speaking at the Dudley Senanayake commemoration over the weekend, Mr. Wijeyawardnene, said the uprising in Egypt began with a similar incident.

He said it is unfortunate that the much needed independent police commission, election commission and the judicial services were never set up though laws were introduced to provide provisions for it.

Mr. Wijeyawardene also paid a glowing tribute to late Prime Minister Senanayake  who was a political leader like no other. He said the late PM was a champion of human rights. He said this was why he resigned from the post in 1953 during the hartal. (Yohan Perera)
