An ornamental walking stick believed to have been used by Sri Lanka’s last King Sri Wickrema Rajasinghe, was seized by the police when a person from Menikhinna was trying to sell it for Rs. 500,000.

The walking stick studded with precious stones, made of an unidentified variety of metal is about 3 ½-feet long and weighs about ten kilos.  The bulbous structure in the centre of the walking stick has been carved with designs. The raid was carried out by a team of Central Division Crime Investigations Unit officers who disguised themselves as prospective buyers.

However the suspect, said to be a Commando of the army had fled the scene and is evading arrest. (Shane Seneviratne)
