334 killings so far this year

A total of 334 killings were carried out in Sri Lanka from January to August this year, Parliament was informed yesterday. This was compared to 443 killings in 2015.

Of the killings, 90 had occurred in the Western Province, an answer tabled by the government in response to an oral question by opposition MP Dallas Alhaperuma revealed.

During the same period there were 267 incidents of attempted murder, in which fire arms were used in 156 attempts.

In 2013 there were 402 assassinations in the first eight months, and 391 assassinations during the same period in 2014. (Yohan Perera)
