Key decisions in ten days: UNP

The UNP said today that it would hold a working committee meeting in ten days time to decide on how the new committee members will be appointed and other formalities concerning the posts in the party.

General Secretary Tissa Attanayake addressing the media after the working committee meeting today said that decisions made on the working committee appointments were led by UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe who decided on making a decision on the elections in ten days.

When questioned on UNP Deputy Leader Karu Jayasuriya’s decision to contest for the party leadership, he said he was informed of Jayasuriya’s decision through a letter he had sent Attanayake which had a newspaper cutting on the Deputy Leader’s decision to contest against the UNP leader for the top UNP position.

“He sent me a letter which had the newspaper cutting which mentioned his interest in contesting. It should have been sent to the party leader instead of me therefore I cannot comment on its validity,” Attanayake said.

He said nine new members will be appointed to the working committee of which there will be two Municipal Council members, two Urban Council members and five Pradeshiya Saba members. Two of the nine members will be women and a vacancy will be given to the Colombo Mayor or the Municipal Group Leader. (Olindhi Jayasundere)
