The Kandy Municipal Commissioner has turned down an order by a senior Police DIG to catch stray dogs in Kandy especially during the Esala Perahera.

Municipal Commissioner Chandana Tennakoon rejected the order made by senior Police DIG Gamini Navaratne to catch stray dogs in the city especially those who were on route of the Perahera stating that it was an impossible task.

The police order was made after a woman who had come to watch the Perahera was bitten by a stray dog.

When contacted, Veterinary Surgeon of the Kandy Municipal Council Dr. S.R. Jaysinghe said that it was an impossible task, especially during Perahera to catch the stray dogs as there was no place to shelter these animals.

However he added that a majority of the dogs had been treated for anti rabies. (Daily Mirror online)
